Mandaue Fire victims get cash assistance

CEBU, Philippines — Around 23 families who were displaced by a fire that hit a residential area in Purok 6A, Barangay Cubacub, last December received cash assistance from the Mandaue City government.

The assistance consisted of ?10,000 for each of the 15 families whose houses were totally damaged, ?5,000 for three families with partially damaged houses, and ?5,000 for five renters or sharers who were also affected by the incident.

Mayor Thadeo “Jonkie” Ouano led the distribution of the financial assistance, according to the City Social Welfare Services Office (CSWSO).

The CSWSO said the aid was provided to help families address immediate needs following the fire, including housing-related expenses and basic necessities.

Barangay Cubacub Captain Alex Borbajo confirmed that the affected families received the assistance.

The fire occurred in Purok 6A, Barangay Cubacub, on December 28, 2025, affecting a total of 23 families, based on data from local authorities.

Also present during the distribution were City Councilors Anjong Ouano-Icalina and Ben Basiga, along with barangay officials of Barangay Cubacub.

The CSWSO said it continues to provide assistance to families affected by disasters in the city.

As reported, the fire that broke out in the said area was believed to have been caused by a drunk 54-year-old man after he poured kerosene on himself.

The incident razed 19 houses and displaced 23 families or 80 individuals. Authorities are investigating the case as arson.  (CEBU NEWS)
