Baricuatro urges vigilance, unity as Capitol opens 2026

CEBU, Philippines — Kicking off her first day in office for 2026, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro reminded Capitol officials and employees to exercise diligence and caution in the performance of their duties, warning that political opponents are closely watching for even the smallest missteps that could be used against her administration.
Speaking during the first flag-raising ceremony of the year on January 5, 2026, Baricuatro stressed the need for vigilance, discipline, and unity as provincial government workers officially returned to work following the Christmas and New Year break.
“We need to be very careful in everything we do here in the Capitol kay naay nag-atang nato, naay nag-atang nako nga masipyat la’g gamay,” the governor said.
Baricuatro acknowledged the political challenges confronting her administration, saying she needs the protection and support of Capitol employees.
“Nanginahanglan ko sa inyong proteksyon kay naay mga entity karon nga gusto nga ma suspenso, ma dismissed ko, ma wala ko sa serbisyo,” she added.
Despite the pressure, the governor said her focus remains on public service.
“Ako rajung tumong mag serve sa katawhan,” Baricuatro said.
She reiterated that even minor details in government work must be closely monitored, as these could become grounds for criticism or attack.
“Gamay nga detail bantayan na nato kay anha ta birahan,” she said.
While acknowledging the political climate, Baricuatro emphasized that she intends to lead with calm and integrity.
“But on my part, I choose to have PEACE,” she said.
At the heart of the governor’s message was service, which she stressed must always be anchored in empathy and sincerity toward the people of Cebu.
“That’s what we are here for: to serve sa mga tawo sa Probinsya sa Sugbo. So let us serve them with a smile,” Baricuatro said.
She reminded Capitol personnel that many constituents who transact business at the Capitol travel long distances from towns and cities across the province, often enduring fatigue and financial strain.
Because of this, the governor urged employees to exercise patience and kindness, discouraging indifference or harsh treatment of the public. Even small gestures—such as offering water or responding politely—she said, reflect the true spirit of public service.
Baricuatro also underscored teamwork as a cornerstone of effective governance, calling on all departments to function as one.
“We should work as one,” she said.
She further emphasized the importance of harmony between the executive and legislative branches of the provincial government, noting that unity is essential in achieving shared goals.— (FREEMAN)
