Cloudy during Walk With Jesus

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cloudy skies with sunny breaks are expected during the Walk with Jesus on January 8, the solemn opening salvo of the Sinulog, in honor of Se or Santo Ni o de Cebu.

A seven-day localized weather forecast prepared by the City s meteorologist, Engineer Oscar Tabada, has been issued to guide devotees, organizers, and local authorities throughout the week-long celebration.

The Fiesta Se or, deeply rooted in Cebuano faith and history, commemorates the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan gifted the image of the Santo Ni o to Queen Juana.

Since then, devotion to the Holy Child has grown into a vibrant expression of prayer, outreach, and festivity, culminating annually in the Sinulog Festival.

Anchored at the Basilica Minore del Santo Ni o, the celebration blends solemn liturgy with community participation, making it the spiritual heart of Cebu s identity.

The pastoral Suroy Ni o began late last month, had visits to northern and southern institutions, including UCMed Mandaue, the Cebu City Jail Female Dormitory, Saint Anthony Mother and Child Hospital, Cebu City Medical Center, and the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center yesterday.

These visits bring the Santo Ni o to the sick, incarcerated, and vulnerable, reaffirming the fiesta s theme of compassion and presence.

The Suroy Ni o continues today until January 7 in different areas here extending the devotion to communities beyond the city center.

On January 8, thousands are expected to join the Walk with Jesus, a pre-dawn procession from Fuente Osme a to the Basilica.

This marks the start of the novena masses and the installation of the 2026 Hermano and Hermana Mayores, lay stewards who will lead the religious observances.

Forecasts for that day indicate mostly cloudy skies with only a 20 percent chance of rain, temperatures ranging from 25 to 31 degrees Celsius, and a heat index of 36 degrees in the early afternoon.

Winds from the northeast at 15 to 25 kilometers per hour will bring slight to moderate coastal conditions, with no major weather impacts expected.

The following day, January 9, the Sinulog launching parade will proceed from the Basilica to the Cebu City Sports Center, marking the civic and cultural transition of the celebration. Mostly cloudy skies with sun breaks are expected, with only a 20 percent chance of rain.

On January 10, scattered showers are forecast with a 50 percent chance of rain, coinciding with the Brass Band Competition and Sinulog sa Dakbayan at the sports center.

Sinulog sa Dakbayan, a localized version of the grand Sinulog Festival, highlights Cebu City-based contingents in a dance ritual honoring the Santo Ni o.

Unlike the grand parade, this event emphasizes grassroots participation and community pride, reinforcing the festival s roots in Cebuano identity.

With above-normal rainfall forecasted this week and a low chance of tropical cyclone development, organizers remain vigilant while encouraging devotees to participate with faith and caution.

As Cebu honors its patron through prayer, music, and movement, the Fiesta Se or 2026 stands as a testament to enduring devotion and the resilient spirit of the Cebuano people.
