CEBU, Philippines — The culinary landscape in Cebu received a historic boost as the Department of Tourism (DOT) led the Resto-Run Michelin Guide Plaque Distribution and Restaurant Caravan (Cebu leg), marking the province’s inclusion in the inaugural 2026 Michelin Guide Philippines.

DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco spearheaded the ceremony yesterday, underscoring the significance of the milestone not only for Cebu but also for the country’s reputation as a global gastronomic destination.

“The arrival of the Michelin Guide in our country affirms the culinary excellence that thrives across the nation, particularly in Manila, Cebu, and nearby regions,” Frasco said during the ceremony held at Pig and Palm, one of the 18 Cebu restaurants recognized under the Michelin Bib Gourmand category.

Other Michelin Bib Gourmand awardees from Cebu include CUR8, Pares Batchoy Food House, Esmen, Lasa, Abaseria, and Deli & Café.

Meanwhile, restaurants included in the Michelin-Selected 2026 list are Socarrat, DIP, Lantaw (Compostela), Kamakura, House of Lechon, Abli, Maya, ATO-AH, Enye by Chele Gonzalez, Pares Pares, COCO, and Sialo.

Introduced by the Michelin Guide in 1997, the Bib Gourmand distinction recognizes establishments that serve exceptionally good food at reasonable prices.

Frasco reflected on the journey that led to the Michelin Guide’s arrival in the Philippines, noting that the recognition honors decades of dedication, craftsmanship, and passion among Filipino chefs and restaurateurs.

She also acknowledged the wider impact of these restaurants on the tourism value chain, benefiting farmers, fisherfolk, suppliers, and local producers.

“Following the plaque distribution in Manila, we now honor Cebu,” Frasco said.

“The province has faced significant challenges in recent months, and we are mindful of those hardships. Today, however, we celebrate those who continue to inspire hope. Your excellence will help Cebu rise again to its rightful place in Philippine tourism,” she added.

DOT Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso highlighted the vital role of food in cultural tourism, describing the Michelin Guide plaques as symbols of excellence that showcase the country’s rich culinary heritage.

“They say the way to a person’s heart is through the stomach. At the Department of Tourism, we believe that one of the best ways to discover the heart and culture of a nation is through its food,” Buensuceso said.

“This milestone has become the talk of the town, helping shape the Philippines’ journey toward becoming a premier destination for food and gastronomy tourism,” she added.

Out of the 108 restaurants nationwide recognized by the Michelin Guide, 18 establishments represent Cebu.

Buensuceso emphasized that the achievement reflects a collective effort among chefs, culinary schools, farmers, and local producers, reinforcing the idea that Filipino cuisine is a shared heritage and a source of national pride.

She also noted that historical records dating back to the 16th century describe a Cebuano diet rooted in local produce, seafood, and meats—traditions that continue to influence and define the nation’s culinary identity today.

The plaque distribution not only celebrated individual culinary achievements but also symbolized a broader commitment to promoting Filipino cuisine on the global stage. Both Frasco and Buensuceso reaffirmed their dedication to sustaining partnerships that elevate Philippine flavors worldwide.

“Cebu, we are here for you,” Frasco said. “Just as you have always been at the forefront of Philippine tourism, I am confident that through the resilience and dedication of the Cebuanos, Cebu will rise once more.”

Following the awarding ceremony, Secretary Frasco personally visited the restaurants and sampled Cebuano dishes prepared by Michelin Bib Gourmand awardees, further highlighting the province’s vibrant and diverse culinary landscape. — (FREEMAN)
