Sugbo Kahanas scholars get toolkits, financial aid

CEBU, Philippines —  Another group of Sugbo Kahanas scholars in Mandaue City has received toolkits and cash allowances to help them start small businesses.

Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano led the ceremonial turnover to at least 18 baking scholars under Sugbo Kahanas Season 4 at the Mandaue City Hall on Friday, September 12, 2025.

Ouano said the beneficiaries were also his scholars when he served as a member of the Cebu Provincial Board representing the Sixth District. Each scholar received an oven, an electric whisk, and a ?4,300 cash allowance.

In his message, Ouano underscored that the program empowers Mandauehanons to create their own sources of livelihood.

Aside from baking, at least 60 scholars are enrolled in welding and electrical programs.

In Mandaue City alone, 3,900 scholars have benefited from Season 4 through Ouano’s support during his stint as a board member. Province-wide, more than 70,000 have completed the program.

Ouano also stressed the importance of sustaining the program under the Provincial Government, noting how many lives it has changed.

“Maayo ni nga program daghan ang natabangan,” he said.

The mayor said he will meet with Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro on Monday to emphasize the need to continue the program, which has reached thousands of beneficiaries, including those in Mandaue.

Mandaue’s lone board member, Nilo “Olin” Seno, also graced the turnover. He urged the scholars to make full use of their training to build decent livelihoods.

“Pinaagi na ana dili lang ta makatabang sa atong kaugalingon, atong matabangan ang atong isig kaingon ug ang atong mga miyembro sa pamilya,” Seno said.

Sugbo Kahanas is a skills training program of the Cebu Provincial Government under then governor Gwendolyn Garcia. It offers free technical and vocational courses such as baking, cooking, welding, and other livelihood skills to help beneficiaries gain employment or start small businesses. (CEBU NEWS)
