Mandaue’s public library sets to transform into an e-library

CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City Public Library is currently undergoing renovation to transform it into a modern e-library that will soon operate 24/7, providing students with round-the-clock access to learning resources.
During his inspection yesterday, Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano acknowledged the ongoing flooding issues in the building, which is situated at a lower elevation. He noted that the city has repaired the lower section to prevent water entry and waterproofed the rooftop.
Furthermore, the former Purok Development Office (PDO), located in the same building, will be transformed into a new e-library equipped with 15 additional computer units, which San Miguel Corporation will donate.
Mayor Ouano explained that this setup will allow the library to operate 24 hours a day.
The main library, located on the second floor with its 21 existing computer units, will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Once it closes, the new e-library at the former PDO will open from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m. the following day, catering especially to students who work or study at night.
“Para maoy maggamit sad sa atong mga estudyante nga working or ang shift nila gabie na,” Mayor Ouano said, adding that the computers can be used for research and school presentations.
While the renovation is ongoing, the library remains open until 10 p.m., with existing computer units still available for use.
Mayor Ouano also assured that the Rizal-Bonifacio Memorial Building, where the library is situated, will retain its heritage value.
The exterior will remain untouched to preserve its historic structure, while the interior will be upgraded and enhanced to create a more conducive learning environment.
The mayor added that students will enjoy free internet access in the new facility. To ensure fairness in case of long queues, library staff will limit computer use to 30 minutes per student, strictly for educational purposes.
“Di ta mo-allow og standby kato ra gyung kinahanglan nga naay buhaton sa sulod,” Ouano said. — (FREEMAN)
