APO to build Sinsin school from eco-bricks

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU,  Philippines — Responding to Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival’s appeal for stronger civil society engagement in solving Cebu’s environmental challenges, the University of San Carlos–Alpha Phi Omega (APO) Alumni Association presented a project that turns waste into an opportunity.

The group is set to construct a new school facility in Barangay Sinsin using eco-friendly hollow blocks made from shredded waste materials.

Presented during a courtesy visit to Archival’s office earlier this week, the “APO Waste to School Project” aims to provide sustainable learning spaces for children while reducing the city’s plastic waste footprint, the city’s PIO reported.

Archival, who has long advocated for grassroots-led solutions to urban issues, welcomed their efforts.

“This project not only supports our environmental advocacy but also provides better learning spaces for our children… Turning waste into learning spaces is exactly the kind of forward-thinking solution we need. I commend the USC–APO Alumni for showing how civil society can lead by example,” he said.

The USC–APO Alumni Association, which previously donated a day-care classroom in Barangay Binaliw, aims to complete the Sinsin project by December.

They also plan to establish a center for children with autism spectrum disorder. The center will offer therapy services, basic life skills training, and other free programs designed to support neuro-divergent children and their families.

Their efforts align closely with Archival’s broader environmental agenda, including the 256K Tree Planting Project, a citywide campaign to restore green spaces and mitigate flood risks.

The group also pledged to participate in next week’s tree-planting activity as part of their ongoing support.

Earlier, Archival called on civil society organizations to work hand-in-hand with the city government, especially in addressing the garbage crisis, which he identified as a major contributor to flooding.

Speaking at the CSO Conference organized by DILG Cebu City, he emphasized the importance of early education and simple, impactful practices, such as using reusable tumblers, to instill environmental consciousness among residents.

“We must start educating our communities early, beginning with our children… Civic action, no matter how small, can shape a cleaner, safer Cebu City,” Archival said. l/BR
