Ironman 70.3 boosts local tourism
CEBU, Philippines — The 2025 edition of the Ironman 70.3 in Lapu-Lapu City did more than test the limits of endurance—it also gave Cebu’s local economy a powerful boost.
With 1,400 athletes from 49 countries, accompanied by families, coaches, and crew, the internationally renowned triathlon event translated into strong tourist arrivals, near-full hotel occupancy, and increased spending in local establishments.
“Basing sa akong pagpangutana sa mga hotels, halos puno ilang rooms,” said Garry Lao, head of the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Office.
He underscored the clear economic impact was significant—not just for the hotels, but for restaurants, transport operators, and small vendors.
Despite being held in August, traditionally a lean month for tourism, Ironman 70.3 drew in thousands, reaffirming Lapu-Lapu City’s status as a premier destination for global sports events.
“Ironman has helped boost our tourism industry by showcasing the natural beauty of our beaches, the hospitality of our people, and the strength of our community,” Lao shared.
Megaworld’s Mactan Newtown once again served as host venue, while the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX)—the country’s longest toll bridge—featured dramatically along the 90-kilometer bike course for the third time.
The route traversed Lapu-Lapu City, Cordova, and parts of Cebu City, spreading economic activity across localities.
Princess Galura, president of Sunrise Events Inc. and the Ironman Group Philippines, credited the event’s sustained success to strong partnerships with local government units and private stakeholders.
“The beauty of Lapu-Lapu is that it’s very engaged. The LGU understands what needs to be done, and they deliver—even with a change in leadership,” Galura said.
She said they were able to align with new officials early on ensuring that the continuity of the race remained a priority.
Galura noted that Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival both gave their full support, with the governor attending the race gun start despite her demanding schedule.
She said their presence signals strong government backing for events that drive tourism and economic activity.
Baricuatro later pledged continued support for Ironman and other sporting events that highlight Cebu’s beauty while fueling local industries. Security was also a key factor in ensuring the event’s smooth conduct.
Over 800 police officers were deployed by the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO), alongside maritime personnel, disaster response teams, and other security agencies.
There were no incidents of unruly crowd behavior, and all rules were followed, said LCPO spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christian Torres.
Torres said only one minor self-caused bike accident was reported and immediately addressed by medical personnel deployed in the area.
The race attracted a diverse field, including first-time participants from Slovakia, Egypt, and Lithuania. Japan led the international contingent with over 80 athletes, followed by the United States and Singapore.
While Cebu last hosted the prestigious Asia Pacific Championships in 2018, Galura tempered expectations of bringing the event back in the near future. She said the regular Ironman 70.3 format is more sustainable because it is more inclusive.
“We can reach more age-group triathletes this way, and they tend to stay longer, travel with companions, and contribute more to local tourism,” she explained. /FPL (CEBU NEWS)
