Museo Sugbo to reopen in August

CEBU, Philippines — After being closed for two years, the historic Museo Sugbo will once again welcome the public on August 28, 2025, in time for the Charter Day of the Province of Cebu and Heritage Month celebrations.

The reopening is in line with the directive of Cebu Governor Pamela “Pam” Baricuatro, who emphasized the importance of preserving Cebuano culture and history through accessible and vibrant heritage spaces.

Paulo Uy, Provincial Chief of Staff, disclosed that minor renovations are now ongoing, particularly on waterproofing and structural areas that have deteriorated over time.

These upgrades are aimed at protecting valuable artifacts and ensuring the safety of future visitors.

The reopening will also bring several new features, including a possibility of souvenir shop and a coffee shop, allowing guests to enjoy snacks or refreshments while discussing history. Entry fees are also being considered to support maintenance costs.

“Pwede ra mag-charge bisag P10 to 20...pwede nato gamiton as discount sa pagkaon sa enterprise nga atong ibutang didto,” said Uy.

He added that cleaning efforts are underway to remove overgrown plants, clear parking areas, and eliminate vegetation that could damage the building’s historic walls.

As posted in the official Facebook page of the province, Cebu Province, Jose Eleazar “Jojo” Bersales, the Capitol’s Consultant on Heritage and Museum Affairs, said the decision to reopen Museo Sugbo is a welcome development, especially as museums are often undervalued.

“I’m very happy that Gov. Pam has decided to re-open the museum… Museums are not earning institutions. They are to be supported," said Bersales.

According to Uy, the Museo Sugbo was previously closed by the former administration, citing high operational costs and low income.

However, the Baricuatro administration sees its reopening as a cultural investment, rather than a financial burden.

“You can’t really put a price on heritage,” Uy added. “It’s something we need to preserve and promote for the next generation.”

Museo Sugbo, located along M.J. Cuenco Avenue in Cebu City, was formerly the Carcel de Cebu, a provincial jail built in 1869 during the Spanish colonial period.

The structure served as a prison facility for over a century before it was transformed into a museum in 2008.

The museum today features several galleries showcasing Cebu’s pre-colonial roots, Spanish-era relics, and wartime memorabilia. — /LPM (FREEMAN)
