DOTr still helping with PUV modernization

CEBU, Philippines — The Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program continues with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) strengthening government support for transport cooperatives to help them meet financial obligations.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has affirmed that the program will proceed while prioritizing assistance for cooperatives that have already consolidated and for groups struggling to pay for their modern jeepney units.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed that cooperatives participating in the modernization initiative receive the necessary support while ensuring that operators and drivers who have yet to join still have the opportunity to do so, as this is their primary means of livelihood and financial stability.
Meanwhile, Office of Transportation Cooperatives executive director and DOTr spokesman Assistant Secretary Mon Ilagan emphasized that consolidation remains open, enabling operators and drivers to become part of a cooperative and obtain provisional authorities so they can continue operations and sustain their income.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has pledged to listen to the concerns of cooperatives, operators, and drivers to facilitate the smooth implementation of the program not only to secure drivers' livelihoods but also to ensure commuter safety.
The DOTr vowed to address key challenges, including low consolidation rates, loan defaults, the high cost of modernized units, and the rationalization of routes to improve the program’s rollout.
One significant initiative is the liberalization of modern vehicle suppliers to expand the supply, lower prices, and ease loan repayment terms. — (FREEMAN)
