City to launch pet dog microchipping project with GPS tracker
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) is set to roll out in July the pilot phase of microchippiong project to enhance pet monitoring and public safety.
Through the initiative, registered pet dogs in Cebu City will soon be equipped with microchips featuring tracking technology.
The program is designed to promote responsible pet ownership, assist in locating lost animals, and improve overall safety within the city.
“This is an exciting next step for our city,” said City Veterinarian Dr. Alice Utlang through the City’s Public Information Office (PIO).
Dr. Utlang noted that while Cebu City had previously implemented a microchipping program, this new initiative features significant upgrades—most notably, real-time tracking capabilities.
“This as the microchip that will be implanted already has a Global Positioning System (GPS) to track registered dogs,” she explained.
“Unlike previous microchipping efforts, this project includes a tracker and scanner system, allowing for improved monitoring and safety of pets,” Utlang was quoted in the PIO report.
The specific area for the pilot implementation has yet to be finalized. However, outgoing Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia has expressed interest in launching the project in Barangays Kamputhaw and Basak Pardo.
Final selection of pilot barangays will depend on further assessments, including the local dog population and support from barangay officials—especially since the number of microchips with trackers is currently limited. (CEBU NEWS)
