Driver falls asleep, causes 10-vehicle crash
CEBU, Philippines , Philippines — Ten vehicles were involved in a vehicular accident at F. Vestil Street, Mambaling, Cebu City—inside the premises of a non-operational gasoline station—at around 6:30 a.m. on April 20, 2025.
Investigation conducted by traffic personnel revealed that 19-year-old Jaanhere Angelo Sadaza of Lapu-Lapu City was on board a Nissan Terra SUV and was approaching the gasoline station when he reportedly fell asleep, causing his foot to press down on the accelerator.
All the other vehicles were parked inside the gasoline station when Sadaza’s vehicle veered to the right and hit the rear portion of the first parked vehicle, which then struck the remaining vehicles in a chain reaction.
A gas pump collapsed during the incident and fell onto two parked motorcycles, also hitting a pedestrian, who sustained minor injuries after her body was thrown against another vehicle due to the impact.
All involved vehicles and motorcycles sustained varying degrees of damage. The estimated cost of the damage has yet to be determined as of press time, according to the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
The TEU-CCPO identified the eight involved vehicles as follows: a Toyota Avanza driven by Jay Julius Tabalin; a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan, Suzuki Multicab pickup, and Toyota Vios sedan owned by Joseph Jumaunan; a Suzuki Alto and Mitsubishi Mirage sedan owned by Angelo Tenchavez; and an Isuzu MU-X wagon driven by Yancy Tuyor. All are residents of Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.
The two motorcycles—a Honda Click and Yamaha NMax—were owned by Raynant Millanes and Nikko Escala, respectively.
The injured pedestrian was identified as Charyln Alonzo, 31, also of Barangay Mambaling. She was reportedly resting on a couch located between a gas pump and one of the parked vehicles when the incident occurred. (CEBU NEWS)
