City agriculture dept re-intensifies native pig dispersal program
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Agriculture Department is re-intensifying its native pig dispersal program to qualified farmers in the city.
CAD officer-in-charge Arlie Gesta, in an interview with The Freeman, said the program initially started in 2019 with 60 pigs and doubled within two years.
The program, which was temporarily halted during the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak two years ago, is now undergoing renewed monitoring and data updates.
Gesta explained that the suspension aimed to prevent the potential spread of the virus to other areas.
"Pag-igo sa ASF since two years ago, medyo nahunong atong monitoring and pag-disperse sa mga anak niya kay di ta gusto nga inig adto sa farm, mahimo tang carrier unya mubalhin na pug tag laing area. Karon, mao ni gi-fcusan ron, Gesta said.
While the city experienced some ASF cases, Gesta noted that native pigs remained relatively unaffected due to their resilience.
Dili pud dako kayo siguro kay bisan nay mga nangamatay, naa man puy mga nanganak, he added.
Native pigs are known for their hardiness, adapting well to weather changes and resisting common diseases.
They do not require specialized piggeries or consistent water supplies, making them an economical option for farmers.
Additionally, they do not rely heavily on commercial feeds, and their meat is regarded as tastier especially for lechon.
Under the program, each qualified farmer receives three pigs: two females and one male.
In return, the farmers are required to give back six piglets, which will then be dispersed to other beneficiaries.
These native pigs are prolific breeders, capable of producing seven to eight piglets per litter.
To qualify for the program, a farmer must be registered in Cebu City, an active member of a farmers' organization for at least six months, and have a fenced area to accommodate the pigs, as they are considered active animals.
Interested individuals can inquire through their respective associations or visit the new CAD office located at the North Reclamation Area, behind SM City Cebu. (CEBU NEWS)
