No work, classes for city’s 88th Charter Day

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — There will be no work and no classes for all levels in Cebu City today as the city celebrates its 88th Charter Day.

Cebu City Mayor Raymond Garcia announced the “good news ahead of time through his social media page.

“Wala’y klase ug trabaho inig LUNES (Jan. 24, 2025),” part of Garcia’s post read.

City Hall officials and employees though are expected to attend a simple gathering in City Hall this morning.

The day is set to start with a Eucharistic celebration with Msgr. Roger Fuentes celebrating the Mass.

A traditional wreath-laying activity will follow right after the Mass at the monument of Don Vicente Rama, the man behind Cebu’s cityhood.

At present, one of Don Vicente Rama’s grandsons, former mayor Mike Rama also continues to fight as the “rightful” mayor of the city.

Family members of the late Don Vicente Rama are expected to be in attendance although former mayor Rama’s presence has not been confirmed.

Despite the fallout between the running mates in the last elections, Mike Rama and Raymond Garcia, the latter is expected to lead the wreath-laying ceremony along with the Cebu City Police Office and Vice Mayor Donaldo Hontiveros.

The mayor and Hontiveros are expected to deliver their own messages in line with the event.

For Tuesday, though declared as a special working day by the Malacañang to commemorate the 39th EDSA Revolution anniversary, no official activity has been lined up by the City government.

The FREEMAN, however, learned that there will be the unveiling of a clock tower at the Parian fire station late in the afternoon. (CEBU NEWS)
