City government eyes other means to dispose wastes from barangay

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

MANILA, Philippines —  Cebu City’s Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) is looking into other options to dispose of residual and bio-waste from the city’s barangays.

SWMB’s overseer Emma Ramas admits the city only has the Binaliw landfill that is currently operated by the Prime Waste Solutions.

“Ang board nangita gyud og paagi nga ang atong mode of disposal daghan ta og options ba dili parehas karon nga landfill ra gyud,” Ramas said via the City’s PIO.

Ramas said they are now coordinating with companies that will take out residual and bio-wastes from the barangays.

Residual waste is defined as those that cannot be re-used or recycled as it already underwent a treatment process.

Biodegradable or simply Bio-waste, on the other hand, are any organic material that can be broken down naturally.

Meanwhile, the city government will be piloting the re-implementation of the “No Segregation, no collection policy in eight barangays— Basak Pardo, Carreta, Luz, Mabolo, San Nicolas Proper, San Roque, Tejero, and Tinago.

These eight barangays are the ones that expressed its commitment to follow such policy, which is why it will be piloted in such areas.

Ramas, however, expects all other barangays to also have the initiative to practice this policy in their respective jurisdictions.

Next month, all of the City’s 80 barangays are expected to sign an agreement for the implementation of such policy.

Aside from the barangays captains, the agreement will also include the inter-faith groups, non-government organizations, and the business sector.

This as Ramas emphasized that the City’s waste disposal problem needs a “community solution” and not only rely on the City government to collect wastes. (CEBU NEWS)
