42 caught for spider fighting
CEBU, Philippines — Forty-two individuals, including 36 who are unemployed, were arrested for engaging in illegal gambling known as spider fighting or “away sa kaka.”
The arrests were made by officers from Parian Police Station 1 of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
The all-male group, mostly single, was apprehended during a raid on a gambling site in Sitio Lawis, Barangay Lorega San Miguel, Cebu City, on Monday night, September 23, 2024.
The individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 64 and hailing from various sitios in the barangay, were taken to the Parian Police Station detention cell, which became overcrowded.
Police Major Marvin Fegarido, chief of Parian Police Station, stated that their office received a tip-off from a 911 operator about the illegal gambling, prompting an immediate response.
Most of the arrested individuals were unemployed, with some working as plastic operators, delivery boys, utility workers, laborers, and water and meat vendors.
Upon arrival at the gambling site, the police found that the suspects could not escape due to the single entrance and exit, catching them off guard.
It was discovered that the house used for the illegal gambling activity was still under construction.
Bets for the “away sa kaka” ranged from P50 to P500.
Confiscated items included four improvised small boxes containing 32 live spiders, an improvised spider fighting arena with sticks and a platform table, and bet money amounting to P2,470 in various denominations.
The arrested individuals will face charges for violating Presidential Decree 1602, which pertains to illegal gambling. — Decemay Padilla, Romeo D. Marantal (FREEMAN)
