CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas launched yesterday a Universal Health Care Integration Site (UHC-IS) in Lapu-Lapu City as part of the government’s efforts to ensure accessibility of quality health care services.

Lapu-Lapu City was among the 15 new UHC-IS included in the Department Memorandum issued by the DOH on May 9, 2024. The other sites include Pasig City, Mandaluyong City, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Bacolod City, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, General Santos City, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, and Dinagat Island.

These new integrated sites will receive technical assistance to integrate their local healthcare systems with the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan welcomed the inclusion of his city in the UHC-IS, noting that it would bring a significant impact to the city’s public health program.

“It has always been my dream that every Oponganon can avail themselves of equitable and quality health care services regardless of their social status and income,” said Ahong.

Meanwhile, DOH-7 director Jaime Bernadas said this new system will establish a comprehensive health center that includes outpatient services such as diagnostic clinics, laboratories, X-ray facilities, blood chemistry, urinalysis and ultrasound.

“Pamaagi sa natad sa balaod Republic Act No. 11223 nagmando ang usa ka syudad makamugna og usa ka citywide health system, ilang hugpungon ang tanan health centers and tanan barangays ug ang mga layo na mga sitio na butangan siya og primary care services,” said Bernadas.

He said this would also ensure that healthcare services remain accessible and affordable for all residents.

UHC-IS prioritizes health promotion, education, and literacy wherein financial grants and support to these additional integration sites shall be provided in the next fiscal year. — (FREEMAN)
