Deadline moved to Dec. 31
MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has extended the deadline of the prohibition against the use of improvised and temporary license plates for vehicles up to the end of 2024, instead of yesterday.
“Instead of the September 1 deadline, the prohibition will start its implementation on December 31 this year,” LTO said, in a statement.
LTO Chief and Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II, however, stressed that this should not be an excuse for owners who have already available license plates not to install the plates already on their motor vehicles.
Aside from extending the deadline for the prohibition, LTO also vowed to aggressively come up with measures to deliver all the unclaimed license plates to the rightful owners.
Mendoza already gave instructions to LTO regional directors and district office heads to coordinate with the local government units for the distribution of the license plates.
All motorists whose license plates are already available are expected to claim them now.
‘We ask the motorists to claim and install their respective license plates as soon as they are available, either in the car dealerships and replacement plates in our offices,” Mendoza said, in a statement yesterday.
Thousands of license plates remain unclaimed in various motor vehicle dealerships, allegedly despite several reminders to the owners.
This led the LTO to issue a memorandum circular against the use of improvised and temporary plates, after an initial investigation revealed that registered owners of vehicles, especially the newly ones, are the ones who did not claim their license plates from the dealerships.
“Wala na pong backlog sa mga four-wheel vehicles so there is no reason for these vehicle owners not to claim and install them in their vehicles,” Mendoza said.
The issuance backlogs, he said, are on the license plates of motorcycles.
“Ang natitira na lamang pong backlog ay mga plaka sa mga motorsiklo at ito po ay ang focus namin ngayon, in compliance with the directive from President Marcos to address all the backlog on license plates by June next year,” Mendoza said.
He also said that the fast-tracking in the release and installation of license plates is also the LTO’s contribution to the crime prevention measures, especially since some vehicles are being used in criminal activities.
