CEBU, Philippines — Two people died, including a former barangay captain, and two others were injured in separate road collision incidents in Tabuelan and Danao City over the weekend.

Vicente Mangabon Pontillas, 52, for barangay captain of Barangay II in Tuburan town, succumbed to injuries after the pickup truck he was riding collided with a dump truck in Sitio Kampotok, Barangay Dalid, Tabuelan, Cebu on Friday, July 26.

Pontillas’ 25-year-old son, Michael, who was driving the pickup, was seriously injured and is currently confined at Mendero Medical Center in Consolacion, cebu.

Master Sergeant Gilbert Allego, traffic investigator of Tabuelan Police Station, said the victims were travelling toward Barangay Lugo in Sogod when their vehicle collided with the dump truck driven by Richard Dacua Matugas, 27, a resident of Barangay Marmol, Tuburan.

Allego said the pickup truck tried to overtake but hit the oncoming vehicle head on.

“Dangugon kaayo na diha na area unya wana kabalik sa iyang lane mao to nga nag-abot gud sila,” Allego said.

The victims were rushed to Tuburan District Hospital where the former barangay captain was pronounced dead. The son was later transferred to Mendero Medical Center in Consolacion.

Matugas, on the other hand, is currently in police custody and may face criminal charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injury, and damage to property.

In another incident, 37-year-old Minerva Ubanan died after her motorcycle collided with a government vehicle in Purok Timbangan, Barangay Guinacot, Danao City, on Saturday, July 27.

Ubanan’s backrider, Niño Jay Adlawan Bueno, 16, student, was seriously injured and is currently confined at Danao Provincial Hospital.

The victims were on their way home from Barangay Poblacion when their motorcycle collided with the canter truck driven by Teodulo Capuyan, 64, an employee of the City Government of Danao.

Police Staff Sergeant Arzie Hill Biatingo told The Freeman that Capuyan lost control of his vehicle after it slid while negotiating a curvy road due to rainy weather condition last weekend.

Biatingo said Capuyan tried to maneuver but hit the motorcycle of the victims before crashing into the gate of a nearby house.

“Ang point of impact sa sakyanan (motor) kay didto siya ga atubang jud sa government vehicle. Possible nga nilikay ang sakyanan (government vehicle) kay didto man ni napunta sa balay, nibangga sa balay,” Biatingo said.

Capuyan is currently in custody of the police and may face reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injury, and damage to property. — /FPL (FREEMAN)
