CEBU, Philippines — A young Cebuano football player was honored with a Lifesaver Award by the local government of San Carlos City, Negros Oriental after saving a drowning kid while he was in a tournament there.

San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo and City Disaster Risk Reduction Office Head Joe Recalex Alingasa, Jr. handed the recognition to Eugene Ivan Ynclino VI, 16, of Don Bosco Cebu-Football Club (DBCFC) for his “courageous response in saving the life of young John Mark Lucero.”

“Eugene's selfless act serves as an inspiration to all of us, highlighting the importance of readiness in times of crisis…. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Eugene for his bravery and kindness that saved a life,” Gustilo said.

The Talisay City, Cebu resident also made Mayor Samsam Gullas equally proud by likewise congratulating Ynclino for his heroic act and the recognition it got from San Carlos City.

“I would like to congratulate Eugene Ivan Ynclino for being awarded of the Lifesaver Award, for extending his bravery to save the life of John Mark Lucero…. You are truly an inspiration to your fellow Talisaynons Eugene and we are very proud of your selfless act to be of service to others,” Gullas said in a Facebook post.

“Daghan kaayong salamat sa imong walay pag duha-duha og tabang sa imong isig ka tao. Congratulations Eugene, you are such a good example to others, and you really deserve this recognition…. May you continue spreading love and kindness to other people,” he added.

Ynclino was part of the U-16 Don Bosco team that competed in the just-concluded Pintaflores Cup 2024.

While on a break, Ynclino “turned a potentially tragic situation into a story of bravery and selflessness.”

Ynclino, along with his teammates, was enjoying a well-deserved break while waiting for their food when they noticed a young boy struggling in the open sea after being swept away by a strong current.

“Without hesitation, Ynclino sprang into action. Despite the treacherous and slippery path down to the sea, he fought his way to the struggling child,” read DBCFC’s Facebook post.

Ynclino managed to rescue the boy, even though he also suffered injuries in his effort to reach him.

“His selfless act is a shining example of the character and integrity that we strive to cultivate within our football club,” DBCFC said.

“Ynclino's actions have not only saved a life but have also inspired us all to act with courage and kindness in the face of adversity. He is a true hero, and we are honored to have him as part of our Greywolves family,” it added.  — (FREEMAN)
