CEBU, Philippines — Two Cebuanos were recently elected to Cebu Technological University’s Board of Regents representing the private sector. Jacqueline Claudine Roble and Dr. Nerito “Rey” Martinez, both took their oath of office last July 11.

Roble, 28, currently works as vice president for finance of their family-owned businesses Roble Shipping, Inc. and Star Philippines Shipping Lines, Inc.

She is also a lieutenant junior grade in the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary 217th Squadron, the Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter Board of Directors assistant secretary, a director in the Junior Chamber International Zugbuana, and an active member of Rotaract Cebu South.

Martinez, 55, worked as the representative of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano in the Board of Trustees of Cebu Technological State College (now CTU) when they passed a board resolution for the said conversion in 2017. Cayetano was then Senate chairman on the committee on higher education.

A month after its conversion, Cayetano introduced the “education at the doorsteps” program to spread the university to municipalities, which expanded CTU from six campuses to 30 with over 65,000 students.

Currently, Martinez is a private consultant on special projects of the local government unites of Consolacion, Cebu, and Bohol.

Martinez said with his new appointment, he will push to convert CTU into a university system so that each CTU campus will have its own budget from the General Appropriations Act.

Roble’s father, Jose Emery “Joy” Roble said that with his daughter in the Board of Regents, his family will soon enter into a memorandum of agreement with his three companies Roble Shipping, Inc., Star Philippines Shipping Lines, Inc., and J Diamond R Shipping Lines, Inc. for the school’s cadetship or apprenticeship program for its Maritime graduates.

“Ang problema sa CNU Maritime School located in Carmen, Cebu ang ilang Maritime graduates kulang og one year cadetship, so dili g’yud sila mahug nga full-fledged graduate kay mao lagi maglisod sila asa sila mag-apprentice. But with our MOA puhon, at least ang mga Maritime graduates naa na sila assurance nga naa silay kumpaniya nga mag-cadetship sila kay naa man mi mga barko,” said the older Roble, who owns more than 50 RO/RO vessels, cargo vessels, and passengers ships.

He added that graduates who will have their cadetship with them will be fully trained and have a big chance of employment in their company. The company will soon donate a vessel engine so Maritime students will have hands-on experience in engine repair.

He said his daughter will focus on three E’s: Education, Employment and Economy.
