BFAR-7 logs increase in fry production

CEBU, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-7 has attained a remarkable increase in fry production, indicating a significant leap for the aquaculture sector in the region for the month of April.

BFAR-7 said that a combined production of 8,118,853 fry comprising of 4,893,875 (60.27%) milkfish; 3,217,838 (39.63%) tilapia; and 7,140 (0.10%) carp was achieved from their production facilities in the region.

It said that Clarin Freshwater Fish Farm (CFFF) in Clarin, Bohol emerged as a leading contributor for Tilapia with 2,790,038 fry, followed by Lake Danao Freshwater Fish Farm (LDFFF) in Camotes, Cebu with 408,660 fry; and Ubay Brackishwater Fish Farm (UBFF) in Ubay, Bohol with 19,140 fry.

Bangus production also showcased a commendable figure of 4,893,875 fry.

The collaborative efforts of key hatcheries played a significant role for the increase with Multi-Species Hatchery in Sinandigan, Ubay, Bohol contributing 1,121,600 fry; Bantayan Island Multi-species Marine Hatchery, Cebu providing 1,222,775 fry; Central Bangus Hatchery in Calape, Bohol also delivered 2,334,500 fry; and Community-Based Hatchery in Kawit, Medellin, Cebu added 215,000 fry to the overall output.

The report also highlights the various efforts in the aquaculture sector, with other species like carp contributing 7,140 fry, all sourced from CFFF.

“The production report reflects BFAR-7's unwavering commitment to advancing aquaculture practices, promoting environmental-friendly technology, and fostering socio-economic development in the region,” it said.

As the region continues to face challenges and opportunities in the aquaculture sector, BFAR-7 added that it remains steadfast in its mission to support the sustainable development of aquaculture sector in the region. — (FREEMAN)
