Suganob annihilates Ishizawa in eight rounds, keeps WBO belt
TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines — In a virtual clinic, Bohol’s pride Regie “The Filipino Phenom” Suganob blitzed through a dominant eight round TKO victory over the tough as nails Japanese challenger Kai Ishizawa to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Global light flyweight belt in the main event of “Kumong Bol-anon XV” presented by PMI Bohol Boxing Promotions on Tuesday, April 30, at the Holy Name University (HNU) Barder Gym here.
In what is by far the finest perfomance of his career, the 26-year-old Suganob battled though a bloodied face from a deep cut on his forehead caused by an accidental head-butt in the opening session but it did not seem to bother the lion-hearted hometown idol at all.
From the get go, Suganob launched a relentless offensive on all range, peppering the gritty Japanese visitor with an assortment of vicious punches to the head and body.
Ishizawa though was brave enough to withstand Suganob’s non-stop attack.
But not in the eighth round when Suganob landed a powerful left hook to the head that sent Ishizawa down at the seat of his pants for the first time.
Ishihawa quickly beat the count only to be at the receiving end of another heavy bombardment by Suganob, who felled the Japanese for good with crushing combinations to the head .
Ishizawa’s corner threw in the towel even before referee Danrex Tapdsan could officially wave off the bout to prevent the Japanese from further damage.
The time of the stoppage was 2:38 of round eight.
Ishizawa wallowed on the canvas writhing in pain while gasping for breath for several minutes before being stretchered out of the ring for further medical attention.
Suganob raised his record to 15-1 now spiked with 5KOs , while Ishizawa dropped to 11-4 with 10KOs. (CEBU NEWS)
