CEBU, Philippines — With Cebu City’s 87th Charter Day celebration, Mayor Michael Rama vows to continue the legacy of his grandfather, Don Vicente Rama, who authored the Cebu City Charter.

During yesterday’s Charter Day ceremony, which was attended by Cebu City officials, guests, and employees of the Cebu City government, Rama stressed that he will continue to work hard so his grandfather’s efforts will not go in vain.

In his message, Rama assured to continue his service to the city, while a list of some of the city’s recent accomplishments were also presented.

This included the efforts under the Gubat sa Baha program, which aims to help stop flooding around the city.

Also presented were programs around medium-rise buildings, opening of more roads, and efforts to boost the economy.

Also highlighted was the recent Sinulog 2024, which Rama said more will be expected next year, and the upcoming hosting of the Palarong Pambansa.

Other plans presented include the revival of the Cebu Zoo and making it into an ecopar; Philhealth's accreditation of a dozen barangay birthing centers; establishing linkages abroad; and more classrooms and school improvements.

Meanwhile, the City Council also presented Rama a plaque of appreciation for his service to the city and the Cebuanos.

“His dedication to our city has been exemplary and this plaque serves as our token for his tireless efforts and visionary leadership,” said acting Vice Mayor Donaldo Hontiveros.

“This surprise presentation of the plaque is a small gesture of our heartfelt gratitude for your service and to recognize your role in shaping the tapestry of the city,” added Hontiveros.

In his message, Hontiveros also called on the public to unite in honoring the past while also looking forward to a brighter tomorrow for the city.

Further, Rama also expressed hope for the city to unite to achieve the goal of a Singapore-like city, adding that he is only there to guide the city.

“I am just a messenger, bringing the collective aspirations of the Cebuanos,” he said, as he expressed gratitude to Cebuanos, as well as to Sto. Niño for the support.

In return, the mayor assured that his grandfather’s efforts of making Cebu City what it is today will not be put to waste. — (FREEMAN)
