Recovery efforts underway for fire-hit sitios in Lapu-Lapu

CEBU, Philippines —  The recovery and rehabilitation efforts of sitios Santa Maria and Seaside in Brgy. Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City, which were hit by a massive fire two weeks before Christmas, has already started.

This was according to Nagiel Bañacia, the head of Lapu-Lapy City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), who shared that the city is now gearing up for the recovery plan to help the affected residents.

The fire that struck past noon last December 12, 2023 destroyed hundreds of houses, mostly light materials, leaving at least 4,000 residents homeless.

Among the strategies that the local government is implementing is to let owners demolish the remaining structures of their houses that were struck by the fire.

In line with this, a “cash for work” scheme will be implemented, which equates to a five-day minimum wage for residents who will participate in the demolition works.

“Aron ila pa sad mapuslan ilang mga kabilya…kining mga kwartaha, magamit ni nila sa pagpatukod, pagbalik sa ilang mga balay. It’s one of the strategies nga di-in ang mga nasunogan dunay igong capacity pagbalik,” said Bañacia.

While the minimum wage is at P435 per day, the displaced families will be receiving at least P2,175.

“May nalang i-abag ipalit og sin, ipalit og ginagmay kay daghan man sad ni sila,” said Bañacia.

Apart from this, the City Engineering Office has also prepared a reblocking plan, wherein a site development will follow after the demolition and will include installation of roads for better access.

According to Bañacia, the recovery plan will be dubbed as “Build, Back, better”.

“Paningkamotan nato nga di na gyud masunog, di na gyud mahitabo tong sunog na nahitabo. So unsaon man? Magbutang tag dalan, magbutang tag facilities, tubig, aron mu arang-arang sad ang kahimtang sa mga tawo,” said Bañacia.

Further, the remaining spaces will be divided equally among the displaced family, which is being prepared by the City Hall, including its house designs. (CEBU NEWS)
