Traffic education in elementary level eyed

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City Councilor Rey Gealon wants traffic education to be part of the school curriculum starting in the elementary level.

Gealon, who also chairs the city’s Traffic Management Coordination Committee, said this is one of the agenda they discussed at its latest meeting with the TMCC.

“Traffic education should start in school among elementary students,” shared Gealon to The Freeman.

Gealon said the young learners should already be taught with traffic signages and when to cross the street.

“As easy as crossing the street to avoid jaywalking and understanding traffic signages and roadmarks, like pedestrian lanes, has to be discussed to the young ones being traffic contributors themselves,” added Gealon.

After thorough discussion and deliberation, members of the TMCC have agreed to include in its yearly calendar of activities school visits.

This will be made by the personnel of the education section of the Cebu City Transportation Office and educate the students via an age-appropriate lecture and workshop.

Aside from that, TMCC also issued a resolution to institutionalize the "Traffic Alang sa Kabataan".

As such, the city government will be allocating resources - personnel, material or otherwise - with the end view of eventually including this in the basic education curriculum as a special short course. (CEBU NEWS)
