City Hall scholars get solid waste training

CEBU, Philippines — Mindful that Cebu City’s academic scholars would later on play a vital role in helping solve the city’s long-time garbage problem, the city government had them undergo solid waste management training and capacity building.

They are expected to help the city in educating others as well as setting an example in segregation, composting, and recycling to their family, community and schools.

Solid Waste Management Board’s Executive Director Emma Rama said the training and capacity building are meant for the 14,445 scholars, who are attending different universities and colleges in Cebu, to realize that there is science towards the reduction of solid waste in the city.

She said they would also be made to see that they are very vital in spreading the knowledge on solid waste management.

“We all have a responsibility sa atong e-generate na waste,” Rama said to the over 4,000 scholars who attended the training at the Cebu Coliseum earlier this week.

Her office, along with the Cebu City College Scholarship Program (CCCSP), which is headed by Executive Director Judy Navarrete, have joined forces to provide the training and capacity building to all the over 14,000 scholars.

Navarrete said, this is the first time that they are giving the scholars this kind of training and capacity building, which is still voluntary.

She said that they have, so far, given the training and capacity building to city scholars with the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation, College of Technological Sciences, and the University of Cebu (UC).

Next week, Navarrete said, they are going to Cebu Technological University, UC-Banilad, and Cebu City Medical Center-College of Nursing for another round of training-capacity building.

Ramas said they embarked on the said activity because the City Government needs everyone’s cooperation and support in solving the garbage problem.

Meanwhile, Navarrete said they would also be involving the city scholars in the next city-wide clean-up to as an exposure activity to show them the bigger picture about the garbage problem and flooding. — (FREEMAN)
