CEBU, Philippines — The Lapu-Lapu City government is now preparing for the rainy days by rehabilitating drainage lines, building catch basins in low-lying areas for run-off rainwater, and clearing canals.

Mayor Junard Chan said that the city is now rehabilitating the drainage from George Tampus Road going to the Sewage Treatment Plant.

The mayor said that the George Tampus Road has a box-type drainage system, 15 to 20 feet deep, which can be easily opened for cleaning and clearing of the waterways.

Aside from this, Chan said there is an ongoing drainage construction in Barangay Gun-ob to Carajay area, all the way to the city's catch basin in Tangke area, Barangay Basak towards Cordova town, which is adjacent to the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway

Barangays Gun-ob and Basak were earlier identified as amongst the lowest-lying areas in the city.

The mayor added that the city government has also purchased two heavy equipment, a backhoe digger, and a payloader, exclusively for clearing drainage lines, in order to prepare areas that are clogged up and to use these equipment to clear the waterways.

Also, in areas where there are no outlets for accumulated rainwater, these equipment will create a temporary catch basin to drain the water and prevent flooding on the roads.

The mayor added that the city will begin clearing canals in the city public market as well as in Barangay Basak using the said equipment.

This initiative, the mayor said, aims to facilitate the unobstructed flow of rainwater during the upcoming rainy days, as he expressed hope that all drainage rehabilitation and construction will be completed before the onset of the rainy. — (FREEMAN)
