Archival proposes the use of e-vehicles

Mary Ruth R. Malinao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival Sr. has suggested for the city government to start the gradual use of electric vehicles to be able to save money.

“In the city government right now, we're spending millions, more or less about P200 million, pag-maintain sa atong trucks ug paghatag og gasolina,” said Archival.

With the increasing fuel prices, Archival said, it is better for the city government to take actions for the money spent for such consumption.

“Nakahibawo ta nga ang gasoline or diesel, fuels, I think di gyud ni manaug. Og manaug man gani (ang presyo), gamay ra kaayo. Karon, niabot na ta og something like P90, even probably P100, and kung ato ning pasagdan nga dili ta mohimo og proactive (action), mag-anam og kadaku ang atong gastohanan sa gasolina kay og dili na mogasto sa gasolina, mohunong man ang atong mga projects sa atong city government,”  he said.

The councilor said this is why he is suggesting to the city government to adopt a proof of concept wherein instead of utilizing gasoline or diesel engines, the city should purchase electric cars.

Archival also recommended the installation of solar panels in the garage of the city government vehicles where the electric vehicles could be charged.

With this, it could be of help in protecting the environment and could save more space in the garage.

If given the opportunity, Archival will talk to Mayor Michael Rama regarding the matter.

He will also sponsor a resolution in connection with his proposal so that the City Council can make a general ruling.

Archival is hopeful that Rama and the council will support his proposal even if he is under the minority group.

He said, as a councilor, he is mandated to formulate measures that will benefit the people. — GMR (FREEMAN)
