Grocery stores off-limits to kids below 15-years-old

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government, through Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has issued a memorandum yesterday, November 18, 2021, disallowing entry of minors below 15 years of age in grocery stores and supermarkets.

“Establishments may consider dedicating a well-ventilated space as a safe waiting area for minors below 15 years of age while their guardians or parents shop,” read the memorandum signed by Acting Mayor Donaldo “Dondon” Hontiveros, Councilor Joel Garganera, and Business Permit and Licensing Office head Jared Limquiaco.

The memorandum is the result of the convergence meeting between city officials and Department of Health-7 chief pathologist Dr. Mary Jean Loreche Wednesday night and the follow up discussion with groceries and supermarkets Thursday morning.

It states that due to the expected rise in the volume of shoppers during the holiday season, it has been resolved that additional measures should be implemented in the city to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission in grocery stores/supermarkets during this time.

Other additional measure is the observance of proper ventilation through proper exhaust or opening of doors, windows, and other apertures.

“Establishments may also adopt proper monitoring of air quality through non-dispersive infrared carbon dioxide sensors and the implementation of mitigation features should carbon dioxide levels increase,” the memorandum further read.

These measures to be implemented for the holiday season shall be observed from the date of issuance of the memo until revoked.

Further, the city government will conduct consultative meetings in the coming weeks for the adjustment of these measures depending on the needs of the establishment and the observed volume of shoppers during the holidays.

Establishments are enjoined to participate in these consultative meetings so that future policies may address whatever issues that may arise in the implementation of these measures. — JMD (FREEMAN)
