Badian tour guides, drivers get aid

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Hundreds of tour guides and tricycle operators and drivers in Badian, Cebu received relief items on Wednesday from Senator Christopher “Bong” Go as part of the latter’s commitment to build a better and more sustainable travel and tourism economy despite the global pandemic.

Go’s staff organized the distribution activity at the Badian Training Center and Malhiao Covered Court where they grouped 689 beneficiaries into small batches and strictly followed the safety and health protocol.

The beneficiaries received grocery packs, meals, masks, face shields, and vitamins. In his video message, Go reminded the beneficiaries to abide by necessary health protocols, maintain a healthy immune system, and get vaccinated immediately to protect them from COVID-19.

Go also sent new pairs of shoes and bicycles to selected recipients to help them with their commute situation amid the limited transportation options. To give their children easy access to educational materials while studying under the blended learning set-up, some beneficiaries were able to receive computer tablets from Senator Go.

As the senator acknowledged the impact created by the global pandemic on the tourism and travel sector, he supported and lauded several government agencies for extending their assistance programs to struggling sectors such as tour guides and TODA (tricycle operators and drivers’ association) members.

Financial assistance was granted to each beneficiary by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, while the Department of Trade and Industry conducted an assessment of qualified individuals for their Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa Program.

Furthermore, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority evaluated beneficiaries who can benefit from their scholarship program. — JMD (FREEMAN)
