House okays nationwide holiday for Lapulapu Day
CEBU, Philippines — The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading the House Bill 8897 declaring April 27 of each year a special non-working holiday throughout the country in honor of the bravery and heroism of Datu Lapulapu in the island of Mactan.
The special non-working holiday would be known as “Lapulapu Day” in celebration of his victory against the Spanish invaders led by Portuguese-born Ferdinand Magellan in the historic battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521.
House Bill No. 8897 seeks to repeal the Republic Act No. 11040 that declared April 27 of every year as special working public holiday in the country except in Lapu-Lapu City.
Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Representative Paz Radaza is confident that Malacañang will declare the upcoming quincentennial celebration of the battle of Mactan as special non-working holiday in the country following the passage of her bill in the House.
The bill was approved on March 16, 2021.
The congresswoman added that the approval of her bill would make the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the battle of Mactan more meaningful to the Filipinos. — FPL (FREEMAN)
