Lapu-Lapu storm surge victims get financial aid

CEBU, Philippines — Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan extended over P3 million worth of assistance to the residents of Barangay Ibo and Olango Island who were affected by the storm surge brought about by the tropical depression Vicky in December last year.

Chan personally delivered the financial assistance to those who lost their homes and means of livelihood. Each family whose house was totally damaged by the storm surge received P25,000 while P10,000 each for those with partially damaged.

According to the records, 60 families lost their homes while 28 families have partially damaged houses.  The City Social Welfare and Development Office also reported 52 pump boats that were totally damaged and another 43 partially damaged.

CSWDO officer-in-charge Annabeth Cuizon said the owners of the 52 pump boats that were totally damaged received P25,000 each while P5,000 each for those with partially damaged. On top of the cash assistance, the city government also distributed food packs good for three days, hygiene kits, dining kits, kitchen wares, and other shelter materials.

Chan said the city government is also preparing a socialized housing in Barangay Canjulao for displaced residents from Barangay Ibo. According to the mayor, the city government is not allowing the affected residents to return to the danger zone. — FPL (FREEMAN)
