Cebu, Philippines — World-renowned industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue will redesign the stalls occupied by the Santo Niño sidewalk vendors to give it religious and heritage touch.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo said Cobonpue offered his expertise to the city government for free.

"Ato nang tan-awon nga dili gyud maka-obstruct but at the same time let's see to it that it will look presentable," said Labella.

The mayor said the stalls should not just invite tourists but should also look dignified. He added that he will allow the vendors to stay there until Cobonpue's design is finished. He also assured that there will be more space for the pedestrians in the area.

Labella reminded the vendors to observe discipline.

"Magtinabangay sila nga maghimangno-ay. Magtinabangay sa mga kasilinganan," said Labella.

He emphasized that the vendors must observe cleanliness and regulation in their area.

"Nobody should be doing any work there," said Labella.

Labella was referring to the vendors doing the actual work like painting of the religious icons they are selling. The mayor said that this should not be done in sidewalks because it is demeaning the image of the Señor Sto. Niño.

"It offends my sensibility if I see them doing that along the street," said Labella.

"It's not appropriate especially for us devoted Catholics," he added.

Labella also reminded the vendors not to put up additional tables anymore to avoid obstructions.

For the construction of the stalls, he shared that the city government will not spend money for it.

"There were many business establishments and foundations who manifested their intention to help us," said Labella.

"I think this is one of those that they could be of help," he said.

Labella and Cobonpue inspected the stalls occupied by the Santo Niño vendors last Thursday evening. FPL ( FREEMAN)
