CEBU, Philippines —  A man who allegedly tried to bribe the police for the freedom of a relative ended up behind bars in Talisay City last Saturday night.

Police identified the suspect as Federico Dejos Antig , 43, single, and resident of Sitio Sambagan, Brgy. Tabunok, Talisay City.

Initial investigation showed that the group of Police Captain Nazarino Emia, deputy chief of Talisay City Police Station, first arrested three men who allegedly led an illegal gambling activity in Tabunok.

The three were identified as Juanito Dejos Antig, 57; Fernando Mancia Antig, 29; and Teofilo Dejos Antig, 52, who are all residents of Sitio Sambagan.

The operation stemmed from the tip of concerned citizen to the police regarding the alleged operation of illegal swertres in the area.

When Federico learned that his older brother and nephew were arrested, he went to the police station immediately.

Emia said Federico quickly handed out P40,000 in cash to one of the policemen in the office in exchange for the freedom of his relatives.

At that instance, the police instead arrested Federico.

Emia said they felt insulted by the act of the suspect, adding that such act is a violation of their duty to “serve and protect” without expecting anything in return.

All arrested persons are set to face appropriate charges next week. — JMD (FREEMAN)
