Manila Bay cleanup to be replicated in Cebu City

CEBU, Philippines — The Manila Bay cleanup may soon be replicated in Cebu City.

Commodore Robert "Bobby" Lim Joseph of The Manila Yacht Club, who was among those who spearheaded that Manila Bay cleanup, discussed this yesterday with Rotary Club of Metro Cebu (RCMC) members, together with and the past president of the Rotary Club in Manila.

Joseph spoke before the RCMC members, saying he wants to replicate in Cebu the same movement he initiated in Manila Bay because Cebuanos Senator Tito Sotto and columnist Bobit Avila were among those who supported him in the rehabilitation of the bay.

"I want to tell the media that we will now prioritize Cebu because Cebu is the microcosm of tourism in the Philippines." Joseph said.

He encouraged his fellow Rotarians and all Cebuanos to adapt and participate in the movement, saying he wants immediate actions, not just plans.

"Join us in saving Manila Bay. Join us in saving Cebu," he said.  He also assured financial support for the project.

According to Joey Baclayon, Cebu City Agriculturist, they are glad that RCMC members accepted the challenge of having the Manila Bay rehabilitation replicated in the city.

He also said that they have been doing this kind of activity for three years now and for this year, they will be focusing on the 10 major rivers in the city.

He added the movement is very timely since the National River Day is celebrated on the 22nd day of February.

The clean up on Bulacao River will be held on February 23.

The government will focus on the Bulacao River, Lahug River, and Guadalupe River, being the biggest rivers in Cebu City.

They are inviting volunteers, participants and advocates to join their activity.
