CEBU, Philippines — Aside from maintaining peace and order, the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) will also help address issue on traffic in the city.

LCPO Director Limuel Obon said he wants to adopt some changes in the city's traffic management and will hold a dialogue with the city's tricycle drivers, especially those plying in Barangay Basak.

“Education is very important. Before I will impose sanctions sa atong mga violators, we will educate them,” Obon said.

The Basak-Marigondon road is one of the busiest streets in the city, as it is the transition point of commuters from their respective residences to their workplace.

Obon shared that when he was assigned as the traffic chief of the then Lapu-Lapu City Station from 1995 to 2000, the Basak road was already congested and its contributing factor include the undisciplined drivers who drop off passengers in the wrong area.

"Katong gamay pa na sauna, traffic na. Karon nga gi-palapdan, mao mao ra gihapon," Obon said.

He added that there were also drivers before that operates with unregistered tricycles. Now that he is the city police chief, he observed that there is still no discipline on the road.

With this, Obon wants to know if there are still colorum tricycles in the city.

He will also strictly implement basic traffic rules in the city by implementing new strategies in traffic management.

The Lapu-Lapu City Government recorded around 400 colorum tricycles last year.

He also wants to put an end to the tricycle drivers' way of dropping passengers in the wrong area, as this will delay traffic and other motorists following behind them will get disappointed.

“I will really do it. (Dapat) mopadaplin kung mopanaog (og pasahero) and respect other vehicles. Kung di na nato buhaton, kinsa man? I know mamiligro ko ana but it is part of my job," Obon said. (FREEMAN)
