Lapu-Lapu City government worker hurt in ambush

CEBU, Philippines — An employee of the Lapu-Lapu City government was injured in an ambush yesterday afternoon along the national highway in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.

Junide Daligdig, 56, leader of the Muslim community in Barangay Basak, sustained several gunshot wounds after six unidentified gunmen fired at him while he was driving his Nissan Navarra.

Police Officer 1 Marian Eyas of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office said the gunmen were on board three motorcycles.

The assailants reportedly started shooting the victim near the vicinity of Mactan Doctors’ Hospital.

“Pag-una kay ang nawong ra ang naigo ani niya unya naka-drive pa ni ang victim pasulod sa hospital,” Eyas said.

The gunmen, who were wearing bonnets and helmets, chased the victim inside the hospital compound and continued shooting at him. Eyas said they are still conducting investigation to determine the possible motive.

“Wala pa gyud mi lead karon. Amo pa gipaabot nga maestorya ang victim. Sa pagkakaron maglisod pa kay naa may igo iyang nawong ug liog,” said Eyas.

Meanwhile, the management of Mactan Doctors’ Hospital has assured the public that despite the unfortunate incident yesterday, the hospital remains to be safe.

In a statement, the hospital management assured that all their patients are safe and there were no other injuries or casualties resulting from the incident.

“Thankfully, there are no other reported injuries or casualties resulting from the incident. Our security team was able to secure and contain the civilians and our patients inside the hospital building. There was also no major damage of property,” the statement reads.

“We would like to assure the public that everyone, especially our patients, is safe with MactanDoc. Our team has always been working tirelessly to give our patients and their families a safe and secured healing environment. We have heightened our security efforts to prevent similar circumstances from happening again,” it added. (FREEMAN)
