‘Abnormal’ buildup: Four truckloads of garbage removed from SRP coast

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Last Tuesday’s coastal cleanup at the South Road Properties yielded four truckloads of trash, prompting Cebu City’s Department of Public Services, which is responsible for garbage collection, to again remind the public to dispose their waste properly.

Naa man guy uban nga ilabay ilang basura sa kanal mao na muhangyo mi sa mga tawo to dispose their garbage properly,” said John Paul Gelasque, DPS assistant head.

He said observance of proper waste disposal would help prevent the city’s drainage system from getting clogged, preventing if not minimizing the occurrence of floods.

He said the cleanup was unplanned, as it was only decided when they decided to call a meeting and do it after they saw the volume of trash during a visit at the SRP.

Aside from improper garbage disposal, he blamed recent typhoons as having contributed to the increased number of garbage at the SRP coastline, prompting DPS to deploy 100 street cleaners to clean an area of approximately two kilometers.

He said the volume of trash was unusual because 10 to 20 DPS are deployed in the area every morning to supposedly maintain cleanliness of the SRP coastal area.

“Abnormal ni sya (nga panghitabo). Fifteen times more garbage ni sya ‘ron compared atong nanglabayng adlaw…
