Vidal prays for government officials to work for “common good”
CEBU, Philippines - As he celebrated the 61st anniversary of his ordination yesterday, Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal prayed for government officials to understand and work for the “common good.”
"May they work always for the common good because that is necessary.... Lord, let them realize what is for the common good," he told reporters yesterday after a Mass he celebrated for his sacerdotal anniversary at his retirement house in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.
Vidal hoped that officials finally understand the real essence of what "common good” is all about. For him, "common good" means keeping a peaceful and orderly community.
"Because how can you govern the people if there is no peace and there is no order in the society?" he said.
Attaining peace and order, he added, would all depend on the people’s level of cooperation with the government.
"We cannot govern the people without their cooperation with us. It all depends on you," he said.
As he continues to actively participate on the religious activities of the Cebu archdiocese, he likewise urged the clergy to be always diligent in serving other people. Members of the clergy and the religious joined him yesterday for a simple gathering.
Vidal also thanked God that despite his age he was still able to serve.
"I wish to thank God for prolonging my short life and I thank you all for collaborating with me in serving the people of God in Cebu," he said.
He told his guest and well-wishers that there were five of them who were ordained on March 17, 1956. He is the only one who remains alive.
"I am the only one remaining, by the grace of God.... Hopefully, I can stay long. Huwag lang kayo magsawa sa akin," he said. (FREEMAN)
