Conservationists hold ‘climate walk’
CEBU, Philippines - An environmental group held a Climate Walk to oppose the establishment of another coal-fired power plant in Cebu.
The group, consisting of Cebu-based environment advocates and Break Free (the global climate movement) members, walked approximately 33 kilometers from Toledo City to Naga City.
Reuben Muni, Climate and Energy Campaigner of Greenpeace-Philippines, said they chose to end yesterday's walk in Naga because of the city’s coal-fired power plants.
The group held a program and a vigil in Naga City last night.
Today, the group will walk another 24 kilometers from Naga City to Barangay Sawang Calero in Cebu City, the location of the proposed 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant.
After holding a protest program in Sawang Calero, the group will proceed to the Cebu City Hall to stage a program dubbed as “People’s Tribunal.”
The two-day walk is meant to bring awareness to the public on the global movement to break free from fossil fuels, and to call on the government to turn towards renewable energy instead of the coal plants that pollute the environment.
At present, there are 26 coal-fired power plants in the country and five of them are located in Cebu (three in Toledo City and two in Naga City). (FREEMAN)
