K9 units help secure Cebu ports

Rowena D. Capistrano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Following the plaza bombing in Hilongos, Leyte, at least 15 K9 units will help secure ports in Cebu during the Sinulog festivities.

This was disclosed by Dionilett Ampil, Commander of the Coast Guard in Cebu in an interview with The Freeman yesterday.

Ampil said every passenger that enters and exists the port will be inspected by a K9 unit.

"Aron sa pagsiguro nga luwas ang Sugbo, matag pasahero nga mosulod ug mogawas sa pantalan, ipaubos gayud nato sa inspection pinaagi sa pagpa simhot sa tanan nilang mga bagahe sa mga naka standby nga K9 Dogs aron sa pagsiguro nga walay makasulod nga bomba dinhi sa Sugbo," he said.

He said no bomb threat has surfaced, so far, but this should not be a reason to be complacent.

"Wala man hinoon kitay nadawat nga bomb threat gikan sa atong mga intelligence personnel apan dili kita mohatag og kompyansa," he said.

He asked for understanding from passengers.

"Sa mga pasahero karon nga mosulod ug mogawas sa Sugbo nga sabton usab ang among pagpahugot sa inspection nga gipahigayon tungod kay para ra usab kini sa kaayohan sa tanang katawhan ug aron usab magmalinawon ang dakong kalihukan nga umaabot dinhi sa Sugbo," he said.

Ampil said 13 substations of the Coast Guard are now on heightened alert.

He asked passengers to be vigilant and report anything that look suspicious to the Coast Guard immediately so that appropriate steps can be taken. (FREEMAN)
