10-meter parking rule at Basilica until Jan15
CEBU, Philippines - As part of the security plan for the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño during the fiesta festivities, motorists can park their vehicles only 10 meters away from the church.
The policy was put in place yesterday by the Cebu City Council in a resolution penned by Councilor David Tumulak.
The resolution mandates that motorists can park their vehicles "10 meters away from the perimeter fence of the Basilica del Sto. Niño, particularly along Osmeña Boulevard, D. Jakosalem Street, P. Burgos Street."
The city's traffic group and police will enforce the policy, which will be in place until January 15, the day of the Grand Parade.
Vehicle owners who will not follow the policy will have their vehicles clamped and towed, Tumalak said.
Tumulak said the policy is also intended to lessen traffic congestion in the area, especially with the thousands of devotees that visit the basilica every day for the daily Masses.
"Naa man gyud na diha sa balaod nga whatever, in terms of security and safety, priority gyud na sya," Tumulak said.
He said 100 personnel from the PNP's reserved battalion in Sibonga, as well as personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, are helping secure the city for the festivities.
"It's just to secure the devotees, city residents nga PNP and the law enforcement are in control sa city," Tumulak said.
He urged the public to follow instructions and safety tips and to understand that the measures are in place to avoid untoward incidents.
"Sorry for the inconvenience," he said.
Meanwhile, he asked politicians to go beyond personal and political interests this Sinulog season.
"It's high time also, not only on political matters and issues discussed… they're also (being) part of the city. Kinahanglan kahibaw sila sa safety and security," he said.
"I just wanted them to know nga they are part of the security and safety of the city. As a[n] elected official, manginlabot gyud sila. Dili kay hisgot anang politika," Tumulak said. (FREEMAN)
