Police bans balloons for Lapu-Lapu fluvial parade

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - There will be no flying of balloons during the fluvial procession of the Our Lady of the Rule this November 12 in Lapu-Lapu City as one of the upcoming activities slated for the fiesta celebration of the holy icon which culminates on November 20 and 21.

Chief Inspector Junnel Caadlawon, chief for operations of Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) said yesterday that the flying of balloons might hamper the visibility of the helicopter flying overhead, and might put its pilot in danger.

Balloons could fly directly towards the chopper, get stuck on its main rotor blade or rotor mast and cause an accident.

“Didto lang sa Muelle Osmeña,  naa ta’y mga nahitabo sa una nga during pag-flower drop, ang mga balloon gibuhian bitaw unya nakuan (nangasangit) sa atong chopper. So karon, amo gihangyo tong mga parokyano nga manimbahay o churchgoer nato nga ig-palupad sa atong chopper di na gyud pwede ipalupad nato kay basin madisgrasya pa hinuon ta,” Caadlawon said.

Caadlawon added that their main concern is the safety and the security of the public for the said event.

Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard elements will be deployed for additional security until November 21, said Caadlawon.

“In place na ang atong security measures. Taga-tuig man nato ni, atoang i-enhance lang,” Caadlawon said.

In line with the US Embasssy statement advising US citizens to avoid going to the Southern parts of Cebu province, Caadlawon said that even if there is no direct threat in Lapu-Lapu City, the public should continue to be vigilant.

“Sa side sa Lapu-Lapu, as of the moment safe ta. Duna’y mangutana nga mga turista nga how true [ang threat sa Southern Cebu] – still [under] verification. Magbinantayon gihapon. Kung naay mga taw nga dudahan, i-report nato,” he said.

LCPO Police, including SWAT and its intelligence group, will remain to be visible in the city’s hotels and resorts, according to Caadlawon. —/JBB (FREEMAN)
