Jeepney drivers mull fare hike
CEBU, Philippines - The National Confederation of Transportworkers Union-Central Visayas is planning to ask for fare adjustment for jeepney citing alleged diesel price increases over the past several months since the provisional fare reduction in February.
NCTU-Central Visayas vice president Romeo Armamento said the price of diesel has already increased by P5 since the 50 centavos provisional fare reduction was ordered by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
Armamento said their organization has initially agreed to ask LTFRB-7 to reinstate the P7 minimum fare.
To recall, the minimum fare for jeepney in Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas was reduced to P6.50 from P7 starting February 8 after the LTFRB granted the 50-centavo provisional fare reduction.
The provisional fare reduction was recommended by then acting LTFRB-7 director Rey Elnar based on the petition filed by former Cebu City councilor Augustus Pe Jr. two years ago.
Elnar recommended that a provisional fare reduction be implemented pending the resolution of the petition. The recommendation was approved by the LTFRB en banc chaired by chairman Winston Ginez.
—(FREEMAN)
