CEBU, Philippines - A 73-year-old woman will be greeting the New Year behind bars after she was arrested yesterday for selling shabu.

Lilia Sable, a resident of Barangay Quiot, was arrested with 22 small packets of shabu during a buy-bust operation in the barangay.

Superintendent Romeo Santander, chief of the intelligence branch of the Cebu City Police Office, said they placed Sable under surveillance for a month before they hatched the bust yesterday.  Santander said they had a difficult time monitoring Sable because she lived in the interior portion of Barangay Quiot but they got to her eventually and arranged for a purchase.

At 11 a.m. yesterday, they arrested her after she handed a small pack of suspected shabu to the poseur buyer in exchange of P200.

She reportedly fished the packet of shabu from her underwear just as the police informant said she would. A female police officer then frisked the old woman and found more packets of shabu in her underwear. The 22 packets reportedly cost P15,000.

Santander said Sable is the oldest drug suspect they arrested this year.

“At first, dili mi makatoo halos kay tigulang na baya na siya. Malooy unta ta pero unsaon man nato nga naa ma’y balaud nga nalapas niya,” Santander said.

Sable would reportedly get her supply of the drugs from a supplier who would deliver the them to her house.

Sable would later admit being engaged in the illegal drug trade reportedly to support the needs of her husband who is already bedridden.

“Sa prisohan gyud ni siya mosugat sa New Year. Unsaon ta man nga mi-enter man siya ani’ng negosyoha,” Santander said.  (FREEMAN)
