Landslide victim gets cash aid from senator

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Yesterday’s heavy rain caused landslide in Sapangdaku, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City, victimizing 51-year-old Rosa Jubay and her family.

Newly-widowed Jubay, who washes clothes for a living, was with at least 15 relatives when muds brought by the landslide entered her house. She has 12 children and 21 grandchildren.

“Tungod sa akong karatol, hapit nako malabay ang akong apo para di intawon matabunan sa lapok,” recalled Jubay, who just lost her second husband in November 2 to diabetes and cancer of the spine.

She said they started living in the said house in Sapangdaku since August of this year after their original house was taken by the bank.

“Gi-embargo man sa bangko ang among balay kay amoa man to gi-prenda tungod sa gasto sa hospital sa akong bana. Unya gipapuyo mi sa akong iyaan dinhing dapita,” she said.

With the incident, Jubay received financial assistance from Senator Alan Peter Cayetano through Rey Martinez, Political Affairs Officer and Chief of Staff for Visayas.

Jubay also happened to be one of the volunteers during a concert rally last Saturday where Cayetano, a vice presidential aspirant, announced that his reported runningmate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will run for president.

Jubay’s group was the one who made the 2,500 torches used during the concert rally held in UP Cebu.

In Talisay City, Mayor Johnny de los Reyes and several barangay captains and councilors were also given medical assistance referrals from Cayetano.

The said medical assistance referrals would entitle each recipient an amount of P500 up to P1,000 cash for those patients who will be admitted at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

“Kani nga amount gamay ra ni. Pero para g’yud sa mga pobre labi na kadtong naglisud g’yud pagpalit og tambal, daku na kaayo ning ikatabang,” said the mayor.  (FREEMAN)
