Mandaue-made products to bear inscription soon

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – All products from Mandaue City should be stamped "Made in Mandaue," Councilor Diosdado Suico proposed through an ordinance.

The proposal was approved on first reading by the City Council. The proposed ordinance would require all business establishments within the city to label their products "Made in Mandaue, Philippines." Whether the products are to be sold locally or internationally, under this proposal, business establishments must adhere to it.

"The noble idea of inscribing in all our finished products for distribution to the world market is to safeguard our precious products from being imitated and to protect the rights and interest of our patronizers of being lured to low quality made products," read a portion of Suico's proposed measure.

Apart from safeguarding its own products, the council is one in agreeing that this measure is in line with the city's Performance Governance System where in it envisions to becoming a primary source of high quality products by 2020.

"The truth and reality for our search of global recognition and supremacy in the field of furniture manufacturing and other household accessories made of indigenous local materials is nearly attained and maybe achieved before the year 2020," the proposal read.

Under the proposed ordinance, it will be the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry that will have the right to monitor compliance of its member-companies.

If a company fails to comply with this ordinance, it will be slapped with a P500 penalty for every product released without the required inscription. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
