On recent sea mishap: PCG probe underway

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard will conduct an inquiry into the recent sea mishap involving a motorized banca.

PCG Cebu District Commander Enrico Evangelista said it is obligatory to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the cause of the capsizing of a passenger boat in the waters off Bohol and Cebu Friday night.

All 28 passengers and crew on board the M/B Mansan were rescued safely except the chief mate of LCT Golden Crescent, Rudyard Payusan, who lost his left foot after it got caught on a cable while trying to help in the rescue operation.

Evangelista explained that due process has to be exhausted prior to filing of any cases. He said Coast Guard Station Cebu headed by Commander Weniel Azcuna will conduct the investigation.

 “It should commence immediately,” Evangelista said when asked of the schedule of the investigation.

He said the investigation will cover why the motor banca sailed despite the typhoon Lando, and possible sanctions against the boat operator, among others.

 “All the details will be tackled. Lahat aalamin natin sa investigation period,” he said.

The Freeman tried to contact Azcuna to inquire about the investigation, but he could not be reached.

In an earlier interview, however, Azcuna said they are contemplating of filing charges against the owner and crew of the motor banca for disregarding the rules against travelling at night.

 PCG also considered filing a case for reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury against the crew and the owner.  (FREEMAN)
