To Deter suicide: Hopeline launched in Cebu

CEBU, Philippines –  “There is no health without mental health.”

This was said by Department of Health Undersecretary Paulyn Urbial, stressing the importance of one’s mental health in avoiding depression and suicide, which are a societal concern.

Urbial, who talked before university students here in Cebu yesterday, also cited the importance of physical fitness as one of the ways to combat depression and suicide.

“We should have physical activity and develop a healthy lifestyle for our mental wellness,” he said.

In order to help those who are suffering from depression or having suicidal tendencies, Hopeline was officially launched yesterday.

Hopeline is a 24/7 confidential crisis support service that is aimed to help Cebuanos who are at risk of suicide.

With a theme, “Dignity in Mental Health,” Jean Goulbourn, president of Natasha Goulbourn Foundation, said Hopeline is there to talk to and listen to the story of those who are in distress.

“Hopeline will listen to you. We will listen to you with kindness and understanding. We are here to help you and let you understand never to give up whatever problems you have. Have faith in God because He will never turn his back on you,” said Goulbourn.

Goulbourn said Hopeline receives at least 20 calls daily and most of the problems that have been referred to were all about love.

Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro said mental health is very important and should not be taken for granted.

He likewise emphasized that everybody needs Hopeline, not just those who are depressed and have suicidal tendencies.

In 2012, the foundation, in partnership with Taos Puso Foundation and Globe Telecom, Inc., launched Hopeline in Manila.

Hopeline is an expansion of the initial helplines of the foundation, which main advocacy is depression awareness.

In 2009, the foundation launched the Dial-a-friend, In-Touch Community Services and UGAT Foundation in order to fully address the growing need of people in distress and to help in the increasing cases of severe depression and attempted suicide. —/NSA (FREEMAN)
